Should Seesmic Desktop 2 become your new Social Desktop Application?

Seesmic Desktop 2 has come a long way since it previous release. While I really do like the new interface, speed, and layout it is missing a few things that will make me not want to leave Tweetdeck, permanently, any time soon.

So let’s get to my review shall we?

What I like:

Streamlined design: Once you boot Seesmic Desktop 2 up you will appreciate the elegance and layout.

Columns: The columns are easy to add, as well are additional accounts. You can add Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Foursquare, Google Buzz, and Ping.fm.

Plugins: Also interesting are the plugins that Seesmic Desktop 2 has to offer from 3rd party developers.

Speed Baby: What is also great is the speed. This may be due to using the Silverlight platform, rather than Adobe Air that has been used by many other developers, including Tweetdeck.

Photos: Having photos people share via twitpic, yfrog etc being displayed direct in the timeline is very cool as well.

Quick profile preview button: There is a little Seesmic Icon under each tweet opens up a mini profile that shows bio, follow counts etc.

Tabs: One other thing I like are the 3 different tabs on the left side of the screen. They are All, Accounts, and Userlists. Here you can have additional columns open. This is kind of cool, and it reminds me of Hootsuite BUT you are not able to add additional tabs like you can in Hootsuite.

Real Time Rules: Possibly the coolest feature is the real-time feed. No more waiting for columns to load based on the old twitter API, at least for the home column. I have been having some issues with lists I have open not refreshing real-time.

What’s Missing or Different:

If you are an avid/power Tweetdeck user, there will be some glaring features missing.

Spell Check: This is a must in my opinion, especially because I occasionally mis-spell a word here and there.

Scheduling: You can not schedule tweets for a later date. If you can, I have yet to find it. But I rarely schedule anyway, and if I do I use CoTweet.

Reply with #Hashtag: If you are a fan of the Hashtag, prepare to copy paste, or re-type it all the time as Seesmic does not include it in the reply.

Account Sync: Use your 3rd party app on multiple PC’s? Tweetdeck has the account sync feature. But with the speed of Seesmic, setting up columns on a different PC will not take that long.

Preview Link: Do you want to see where you are going before you click that bit.ly link? I know I do!

ReTweets: By default, the ReTweet is the Twitter style version only. Unlike Tweedeck, you can not option to the old style RT to be default. You can however still do the old style RT by selecting the options icon, and selecting “Quote (Old RT)”. This I am not a fan of as I prefer the old RT, and I do not like the extra clicks to make it happen.

Reply All: In Seesmic it is called “Mention All” and I guess that is OK. The annoying “feature” is it adds your own name to the reply. Like Tweetdeck, it should strip your own name in the “Reply All” tweet. (Let’s save character space)

Filters: If you ever want to filter out content in twitter streams, no way to do it here in Seesmic.

Search: There is no way to start a search column, at least not that I have found. You can however click on a #Hashtag in Seesmic Desktop 2 and it will open a search column for that hashtag. So from what I see, you can not do a keyword search in Seesmic Desktop 2. Correction: Search is at top right, and will open a new column.

In the end, I guess it really comes down to how you use your application of choice. For me, there is just too much I am used to in Tweetdeck to abandon it completely. Tweetdeck now has a real-time version that I am just starting to use, and so far so good there as well. However, I think real-time is still having some hiccups on both platforms, and that could be due to Twitter, and not the apps.

Overall I am really impressed with Seesmic Desktop 2, as well with the service I have been getting from them on Twitter (@askseesmic). I have been experiencing some challenges, and they have been great at replying on twitter!

Currently I am using Seesmic Desktop 2 only on my Windows PC, and I think I will try it out on my Mac eventually. (I am just a boob about installing Silverlight on my Mac)

Real-time side note: When you follow thousands of people, this stream can just go non-stop. Be sure to make twitter lists to sort out the constant stream of information hitting your screen.

So what do you think about Seesmic Desktop 2? I’d love your comments below!

Until next time…

I was asked by Klout if I wanted to be a part of a group of people to receive the series pilot of the new Fox show Lone Star. I received a party pack with beer glasses, wine glasses, popcorn, poster, bottle opener and a corkscrew (Photo 1, Photo 2). The idea was to throw a party, watch the show, tweet, facebook and maybe write a blog post… if I wanted to. No, I was not asked to write a review in exchange for this. I explain more about that in my previous post, and here is the official disclaimer.

So on to the review.

Lone Star is one series, thanks to the great advertising by Fox, that I was excited to see this season, so I was thrilled to be able to preview the show.

Lone Star’s leading man James Wolk plays the dual identity con man Robert/Bob Allen who was brought up at an early age to con people and companies by his father John Allen played by David Keith. Through the episode we learn that the son has surpassed the father in his abilities to con people, but the son has now grown attached to two women, the first being his wife Cat played by Adrianne Palicki and his girlfriend Lindsay played by Eloise Mumford, both of whom are marks for what is supposed to be one of the father and sons biggest con jobs. But now the son wants out of the family business… or does he? All we know for sure is that he wants both women, and both lives to stay in tact.

The show was decent for a pilot episode, but after seeing all of the trailers I was expected to be blown away. I feel like they tried to put too many story lines into one episode, and I think it would have been a little better had they made this a 2 hour premiere, or let the show evolve and introduce more cast as time went on. The episode was like a 5 courses of appetizers, and never getting the main dish.

It did leave me wanting more however, so I am sure I will tune in to see where the show goes from here.

Some are calling this the Dallas meets our generation, others comparing it a little to Big Love (what?). This show wants you to like the bad guy as he is seemingly wanting to turn his life around and be normal. Maybe they should compare this more to Dexter (swap serial killer for con man).

I am not going to give away any details of the show here on this post as I do not want to give away any spoilers… so you will have to watch the show and decide for yourself.

Lone Star also stars

Mark Deklin as Trammell Thatcher (Cat’s Brother)

Bryce Johnson as Drew Thatcher (Cat’s Brother)

Jon Voight as Clint Thatcher (Cat’s Father, Oil Tycoon)

Jon Voight is cool in this role, but his texan accent seems a bit fake and he is the only one on the show with one so far. But since he is the oldest, the father, and the one who dug his own oil well many years ago, he must have a texas accent right? Accent aside, I do like the credibility he brings to the show of otherwise lesser known actors.

It will be interesting to see where this show goes… and if will earn a permanent spot on my already too full DVR!

Lone Start Final verdict is a solid B / 2.5 out of 4 stars… BUT I want this show to hook me and bump the grade to an A or 4 Star

I am interested to know what you think of the show, so quit reading and get to leaving a comment below will ya?

Until next time,

Doc

The pluging is called Editorial Calendar and it works like a charm. In fact I started this post using the plugin.

If you fail to plan, you may be planning to fail!

I have not been great at getting content to my blog, and I really need to do a better job of it. So when I saw the post from Chis I thought this may be something that could help me schedule posts, and keep blogging on top of my mind.

The cool part is being able to start a new post right from within the calendar. So if you have ideas or maybe a series of posts you want to write, you can schedule them right here as drafts. Within moments you can have a handful of posts started and scheduled.

Another cool feature is drag and drop… being able to move your post drafts around the calendar as needed.

If there were any features I would like to see added it would be for the calendar to automatically move any draft that did not get posted to a future date automatically. Having a draft 30 plus days old that you have to scroll back and find is my only complaint. But that is really not a big deal as you can still see all of the drafts in the traditional view, just no drag and drop available there. Maybe they will add that feature down the road? You know, kind of like an unfinished task in outlook that just keeps on haunting you until you complete it!

Anyway, if you like to blog often, or need a great way to help you visualize what you are doing to help you plan ahead, I highly suggest using this plugin.

According to the plugin page, here are some of the Editorial Calendar features:

See all of your posts and when they’ll be posted.

Drag and drop to change your post dates.

Quickedit post titles, contents, and times.

Publish posts or manage drafts.

Easily see the status of your posts.

Manage posts from multiple authors.

I am planning on using this plugin to get my blogging butt in gear, and help to plan more content for my site.

How do you see yourself using this plugin, could it help you as well?

Would love your comments below.

Until next time,

Doc

Will NYPD Pizzeria Be My New Favorite Pizza Place? Unfortunately… No.

I must say I was pretty excited to try out NYPD Pizzeria in Draper Utah. Last week there was a Groupon for NYPD Pizzeria, and I decided that now was the time to give this new pizza franchise a try.

I am always on the lookout for great pizza… something that sometimes seems hard to come by with so many chains selling crap disguised as pizza for $5.00 – $10.00 a pie. So when an outfit comes into town with a higher price point, and the myth of the “New York Style Pizza” in tow… it just has to be good right… right?

Let’s start from the beginning. As we walk in to NYPD Pizzeria, I am greeted with a sign that says please wait to be seated… we wait a few moments, and a preoccupied girl comes up and proceeds to tell us to sit where we like…Ummm… OKAY. We go find a seat and a few moments later she follows with menus.

Inside NYPD Pizzeria

NYPD Pizzeria has quite a large menu. Many seemingly awesome ingredient combinations you can choose from, as well as pasta, wings, calzones and sandwiches. The restaurant is decked out with NYPD flavor and nick-nacks as well as some big screen TV’s on the wall. Yup a cool looking place! And if you are lucky you may even see the pizza maker flipping the pizza dough around like he is competing on a Food Network show.

Our server comes by and we order our meal. 18″ Hawaiian and a Manhattan Meat Lovers… as well as Garlic Knots to start us off as an appetizer.

Garlic not Knots?

The Garlic Knots arrive… and rather than being Knotty, they are more of just a roll with some garlic slathered on them (see photo of how it is supposed to look, vs how it looked). When I hear Garlic Knots I think of Free Wheeler Pizza here in Salt Lake City where these rolls of bread are soaked in a heavenly bag of butter and garlic so when you bite into them you get that squishy burst of flavor and awesome chew of the perfectly cooked bread.

Now these look Knotty...

So, needless to say, in comparison, I was disappointed not only in presentation but in taste. These could have been much better. On the plus side was the marinara sauce that was served with the “Knots”, it did had a good flavor.

Pizza arrives, and I am excited to dig in. Up front understand that I am not a huge fan of the super thin NYC style of pizza… I am a crust guy and I like it thick and chewy. But I am never one to shy away from any pizza, as pizza is the perfect food, and unless it is horribly massacred, I will eat it. So with that being said… on with the review.

We dig in, and I start with the Manhattan Meat Lovers: Pepperoni, meatballs, smoked bacon, homemade sauce and mozzarella cheese. The pizza is decent, but I think it is just a bit too greasy. “Yeah yeah yeah Doc” you say to me, “you ordered Meat Lovers… dumb ass!” True, I did… but I have ordered a meal lovers elsewhere, and it was not nearly as greasy, or if it was, it was sopped up in a thicker crust.

The flavors on there own left me wanting more… the bacon and pepperoni seemed undercooked and flavorless, and the meatballs were not balls, the were more like a shaving of a meatball. Really thin, and darn near tasteless. By the time I finished up my pie of this flavor, I found myself looking forward to getting to the thicker part of the crust… you know the part some people do not eat because they think it will grow hair on your back! (dang… so that’s why, figures!) ANYWAY, I actually scraped the meat mixture off the thin pie, rolled it up and finished it off leaving a pile of meat and grease on my plate.

The Hawaiian did have good flavor as the ham and pineapple are always a winner… who can mess that up anyway… anyone?

By the end of the night at NYPD Pizzeria I left very disappointed… yes in the food, but more in the service. From the moment we walked in, we were not greeted as pleasant as you would hope to be in a sit down establishment. I have been greeted more pleasantly at a 7-Eleven connivence store than we were here. Hell, there has been better greetings at Dee’s family restaurant at 1AM by the disgruntled manger who may or may not have just broken up with his wife but was forced to work his late shift none the less! Sorry… I digress… Stay on topic Doc!

From the time our order was taken we were visited by wait staff a total of 3 times, once to take our order, once to deliver our order, once to drop off our check. Now I said visited right? I had to wait and ask the staff for a refill on my drink 2 times (I gauge how I will tip by how many times I am refilled without asking… do not judge), and we had to wait and flag down the server to pay her for god sake! And if it were not for me to say “have a great night” she would have kept on walking after taking my Groupon and cash without having to seemingly force herself to turn around and say “you too”. God forbid you thank your customers for visiting your place of business… I mean really, who does that in this day and age? Maybe it is the New York way to take your money and kick your ass out so the next victim can walk in the door?

Now Hiring at NYPD Pizzeria

Interestingly, there was a sign out front looking for an assistant manager, servers and delivery drivers… might I suggest starting with a Manager instead? Not one person in this place that was employed smiled one time… and I was watching. From the other server who seemed annoyed that we came in in the first place, to the server guy in training who acted like he really wanted to say hello… or was he just trying to give me a signal to leave?

In the end, while I really wanted to like this place, I left with really mixed emotions. You know, like the ones you have Christmas morning after you open your “I know this is the video game present I wanted for a year by the shape of the box”, but to open it and find out it is a previously viewed movie of Tuner and Hooch with the $5.00 price tag still on it with the wrapping torn open so you know your x-wife watched it before you got it as a holiday gift! Oh shit, sorry, here I go again… back to NYPD!

Honestly, I am not one to write up reviews like this, I do not like to pan a restaurant. But honestly, I can not sit here and lie and say it was the best experience ever. Maybe it is really not the restaurant I am panning, but an odd bad food night, and a woke up on the wrong side of the bed service evening?

I have been to NYC once in my life for a total of 40 hours… I ate at 5 places, one being a pizza by the slice place. Service in NYC is fast paced, but good. Restaurants dote on you and give you great service. So while NYPD Pizzeria may have brought the flavor of NYC Pizza to SLC, they did not bring the service.

On a side note, it was interesting that they had a sign on the door for folks who used Groupon, saying that they have to have the printed coupon with them as they apparently did not accept the iPhone version, so I am glad I brought mine otherwise my 15 mile trek there would have been in vain! Also, I noticed a couple other folks in there with Groupon coupons printed as well. Maybe the staff was sick of Groupon people, maybe they feel like they would not tip well so why give them decent service? Who know’s if that is why, but it could very well be part of the reason.

At the end of the night I felt like I paid too much for the food and service… Total bill $28.98 + an unearned 20% tip. Total out of pocket $19.00, and it left me wanting a refund!

First Groupon experience = Meh!
NYPD Food = B-
NYPD Service = D

So will I go back? Most likely… as I always give a place a second chance… but almost never a third.

So for what it is worth, this is my opinion… have you been to NYPD Pizza? Did I just have an off night? Am I just too hard to please and should I just take shitty service like a man?

Would love to hear back from you… be sure to comment below.

Until next time…

Possibly it was until I finally downloaded the audio book version and listened to it that I decided now is the time to put my review of the book on my blog.

I have been a fan of Gary for as long as I can remember, and almost one year ago I wrote this post “You’re Either Following Your Passion or You Are a “Loser”!”, so when his book was released, I bought it immediately and read it in one day.

If you have been following Gary at all for a decent amount of time, either on Twitter, his personal website, Wine Library, or if you have seen any or all of his keynote speeches, you are going to feel right at home reading this book.

Gary talks about cashing in on your passion, and how now is the perfect time to get your personal brand in order, and if you do things properly you can cash in and monetize your personal brand! How is this done according to Gary? You “Crush It” by using all the FREE tools you can get your hands on… Twitter, Facebook, UStream etc. But these tools are not the end all be all… you have to have passion for what you want to do, and you have to care about your audience, fans and customers.

What I almost enjoyed as much as the how-to’s in the book was hearing about Gary’s background. Subject matter that up until the book I had not heard about. But the meat of the book is the straight up position that in order to crush it, you have to be willing to do the work… and Gary gives many great ideas on how to get the job done!

After taking both versions of the book in (paperback and audio) I think that I enjoyed the audio much more. Personally I m more of an audio/visual type of person… but if you you follow Gary, and enjoy listening to him already, the audio version is the champ! Not to mention that the audio book just lets more of his personality and passion come through. And as an added bonus, many of the chapters Gary goes off and adds additional content, “riffing” as he puts it, giving more up to date content as the audio book was recorded months after the book was written and released.

In this day and age with all of the social media tools Gary talks about, I can totally buy in to what he says in his book, and I am planning on crushing it myself! I have a couple of ideas brewing that I will soon reveal, but picking just one to start on is the hard decision.

As with any book you read that inspires you, in the end you have to get off your ass and just go for it. I wrote that blog post a year ago, and here I am still not doing what I am 100% passionate about… but that is changing as we speak… and I am so freaking stoked to get this idea off the ground.

I am ready for the hard work that will come with launching my idea because it is finally something I am excited about! Gary says there are a lot of hours between 9PM and 3AM… and you know what? He is right! If you are doing what you love “work” does not seem like work. As the saying goes, time flies when you are having fun!

For one reason or another I connect well with Gary… whether it is his personality, his no nonsense approach, the occasional potty mouth rant (as I am hooked on vulgonics myself), or maybe his ability to just tell it like it is, I really connect! Not everyone will get his style of doing things however… but I will tell you this… like him or not, you better get the message because he is dead on!

I give this book, especially the audio book, a 4 out of 4 Stars! If you have yet to buy it, I have included a link below… and yes it is my affiliate link for Amazon.

Have you read it? What are your thoughts? Please leave a comment below.

Until next time…

While in the kitchen they showed is how they “smash” these 100% pure angus beef patties on a super hot grill to sear, almost caramelize the meat to lock in the flavor and juices that the high grade meat provides.

After the tour we were informed that they were going to run through the entire menu…. and that we would be getting to taste everything. Good thing I brought an appetite that day.

They brought out rounds of food and I started out with the Classic Smashburger. From the first bite I was in love! The flavor of the meat was amazing… and come to find out they have a nickname for the meat once it is prepared here at Smashburger… “Meat Candy”! And you know what, they are right… it is Meat Candy!

They brought out many other hamburger choices, as well as salads that were delicious, and Hebrew National 100% Beef hot dogs, with my favorite dog being the Chili Cheese Dog. In addition to that they also served us milk shakes made from Haagan-Daz ice cream and while all flavors were good, I liked the Grasshopper Mint the best (although I wish it had Oreo’s in it to make it just right). But I must say I was a huge fan of the Root Beer Float made with IBC root beer… it was for sure my favorite item from the desert menu.

And for the french fry lovers out there, Smashburger has you covered. They have a standard fry that has sea salt as well as the incredible “Smashfries”! Holy freaking cow these are tasty fries as they are made with rosemary, olive oil and garlic. The flavor was outstanding!

So, just when one would think they could eat no more, the owners brought out a burger that is the creation of the owner, whom I believe they said was a flavor specialist or something. This burger was just the regular Smashburger with a fried egg and nothing else. I have never had a burger with a fried egg before, but decided that it must be tried! So while I was stuffed we split this burger 4 ways so a few of us could try it out and I will say this… it became a favorite of the table instantly! It was phenomenal, and the favorite burger of the day for me!

At the end of the meal, and we all left very happy and excited to return. I think I had meat sweats from the “meat candy” for a couple hours after from eating so much, but it was worth it!

Rating for me, based on that visit, is a 5 out of 5.

We went back to Smashburger a couple of days later to see if it would be just as outstanding… and for the most part it was. There was some confusion when ordering the fries on the menu… as one assumed there was a small (side order version) and a larger version (that was more money). However, there is just one size, and it is just cheaper to order it with a meal.

The food was very hot and the burger tasted great again!

So, be sure to go check out your closest Smashburger when you get the chance… it is quite tasty! And be sure to tell them Doc sent you. They will have no idea who I am, and may have a befuddled look on their face… so that alone will be funny enough to just do it… right?

Until next time…

This was my first time attending the trade show, and I must say it was a very cool experience. There were around 900 exhibiting companies at the Salt Palace Convention Center and more than 20,000 visitors… and this year thanks to the folks at Hotcakes, I was one of them.

I arrived at the Hotcakes booth (pictured) and had a nice chat with the CEO of Hotcakes Robert Wright. He took me on a guided tour of their new Hotcakes platform, and I must say I was impressed with what they have going on.

So what is Hotcakes? Well, after walking away from the booth, and talking to a few other folks at the show, I deemed this platform to be a “Reseller Locator’s System for Manufactures on Steroids”!

The Hotcakes system starts by adding their reseller locator’s code to a product manufacturer website.. and when a customer clicks on the where to buy button Hotcakes takes over like a charm.

The system now shows a list of dealers that has also hooked into the Hotcakes platform showing all the products that they carry from that particular manufacturer. The best part is that the reseller did not have to go and add product information such as item photos, descriptions and/or videos to their professionally designed Hotcakes reseller website, instead it’s all done from the manufacturers instance of Hotcakes and pushed to the reseller site automatically! From there the reseller can decide what products they want to show and adjust product pricing etc. Sweet right?

Once on a selected reseller site, customers can see what what products they carry from the specific manufacturer that linked them there. Customers can also see any deals they have on the products as well as the ability to print a shopping list or coupons to be taken into the resellers location. What store owner would not be thrilled to see their website actually working and sending customers through the door with a pre-determined shopping list and coupon? Not to mention, once the customer is in the store. good salesmanship can hopefully get additional sales via upgrades or additional products!

Robert and I talked about one of the main goals of the Hotcakes platform is to help brick and mortar resellers get foot traffic into their location. As an avid online surfer and Internet marketer, I tend to think towards online shopping carts and being able to buy online. I really do appreciate what they are doing here with these features as there are many shops that are losing business to online competitors where people just go and price shop and click purchase.

What I like about Hotcakes:

Ease of use

Drag and Drop functionality on the front end of the reseller sites

The push they are making to help businesses not only get an online presence (if they do not already have a website)

Helping resellers get great qualified traffic to their Hotcakes site via manufacturer links that actually work and show off a professional design and imagery on a reseller Hotcakes site

Promoting foot traffic to the physical store of the reseller

Affordability – $200/mo as a manufacturer and only $20/mo as a reseller

I think back to when we still had our distribution company, and how many manufactures we purchased from and all those SKU’s and I remember selling products online and having to update and add each and every SKU, image, and description to the site and wishing there was an easier way to do it. Well, that was almost 10 years ago and the Internet sure has come a long way since then… and after seeing what Hotcakes has to offer the manufacture as well as resellers I am happy to report that Hotcakes really is a sweeter way to sell online!

I look forward to following this company and seeing what else they come up with down the road. We discussed some of the upcoming features, but I will leave that information to them to distribute.

For more information about Hotcakes, you can visit their site at http://www.hotcakes.com and you can also follow them on Twitter @Go_Hotcakes

Until next time,

Doc

Note: This is not a sponsored post in any way shape or form. I was asked to come to the Outdoor Retailers show by Hotcakes, Demo the platform and ask the CEO some questions. That is what I did, and this is an honest review. Enjoy!

Last night at the last minute I decided to go see a concert from a new up and coming artist Kerli, and I must say I am very glad I went!

Doc and Kerli after the show

Local radio station 101.9 the end put this together and billed it as the “Creepy Lil Halloween Ball” named after one of her popular songs “Walking on Air”. Before the show started the radio station held a costume contest (I did not enter). It was a great way to kick off Halloween 2008.

Kerli has had great response from fans here in Utah and she said over and over during her show how much she loves to come here. I really do not believe that statement to be false as she stayed after the show for 2 plus hours to sign autographs, take pictures and hug each and every fan (I was one of the last in line).

Kerli Performing live at the Avalon in Salt Lake City

The concert started off with a super rendition of “Creepshow” from her album “Love is Dead”. Here you can see a shot of her actual backstage play list!

The Kerli Concert Playlist

The highlight of the night performance wise was when she sang her most recent released song “Strange Boy”. The crowd of approximately 500 really got into this one, and the fans up front were standing and jumping up and down with the beat.

Honestly I did not know what to expect with this show or Kerli as an artist, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised and last night I became a Kerli fan!

This nice young man took the picture of me and Kerli with my iPhone

So when I finally got up to have my poster and newly acquired CD of hers signed, she took a few pictures with me, and wrote a nice little comments on both items, and offered I think 3 (beyond genuine) hugs. This girl really does appreciate her fans.

If you have not had a chance to checkout this up and coming artist Kerli, I suggest you head to her website and check her out pronto.

Until next post…
