OK, so this is just an odd post… more of a rant really, but had to get this off my chest. Not to mention I have been looking for an excuse to blog. (not that one should need an excuse though… right?)

I don’t know about you, but Daylight Savings Time messes with me like no other. This is the round of “falling back” … you know when you get that “extra hour of sleep”? Not to mention it seems like you have to fight yourself just to go to bed at your regular time too right? Anyway…

This morning I woke up at my normal body clock 6AM (really 5AM – thanks you DST bastards), but not before having some crazy vivid dream about a Zombie Cat following me everywhere. This freaking Zombie cat sat there and just stared at me while I was in my minds fictional garage working on some project. So already the dream is jacked up, I hate projects! The only thing my real garage would have in it is a place for my cars, and an extra fridge for beer and frozen burritos. Anyway… I have gone off track already, a rant within a rant, sorry about that.

So after this zombie cat kept looking at me, with it’s bloody face and screatching meowing, I decided to grab a shovel and try to kill the cat… again. (It’s a dream folks, no haters of Zombie cat killers in the comments please). This cat somehow dodged all swipes with the shovel, as if it was a zombie cat from the matrix or something. (Maybe its name was Neo?)

Finally the cat takes off and of course I chase it. It proceeds to clime a fence, so of course I climb up after it. (Rant within Rant #2 – This would not happen in real life, I do not climb fences – Accident when I was a kid, so fences freak me out OK… get over it, and no jokes!). I pop my head over this fence and I see Zombie cat just chilling out, laying on it’s back as if in an easy chair with it’s head resting against the other side of the fence. Why the hell zombie cat needs to rest is beyond me I think to myself… it is dead for gods sake!

So after a moment or two of looking at zombie cat not looking at me (thank god), I decide to let it be and go back to my garage to work on the mystery project. As I am walking I hear a loud meow… I look behind me and I see another cat chasing me. This was not a zombie cat, or at least I was unable to tell at this vantage point, but it seemed to look like an older cat of mine I had a few years ago. As I was trying to get a better look at this cat running at me full force… I woke up having to PEE at freaking 5AM!

Looking at my clock, noticing I have an hour until I have to get up, I hurry and go to the bathroom, jump back in bed and try to will myelf back to sleep so I can finish the Zombie Cat Dream. How will it end, what cat is that chasing me, will it be my old dead cat coming back to haunt me….? Dun dun dun!

Yeah, so much for that. Next thing I know, my brain is thinking about work, I can’t go back to sleep, and an hour later my alarm goes off at 6AM.

So, in case you did not know, Daylight Savings Time sucks! It is worse than jetlag!

So what caused this dream anyway… and why do I remember this one, and not the ones I really want to remember? Maybe I had too much Zombie fun on Halloween? I mean, who besides Steven King (ala Pet Cemetery), has dreams about Zombie Cats?

Maybe, if I am lucky, I will get to finish that dream tonight… Heck I could turn it into a children’s book or something and make Millions! If not, how do you think this dream / nightmare ends?

Until next time…

Recently I have been reading blog posts and articles about companies calling Social Media a major “Time Suck”… I think they are wrong!

I really think the term “time suck” needs to be retired when it comes to Social Media. Time suck has a major negative tone, and to apply it to such awesome platforms where you actually have the opportunity to engage with your clients, or future clients should be considered a TIME MUST!

Let me ask you this: Is Social Media any more of a time suck than a “traditional” job within a typical business organization? If you are a business owner reading this, do you consider your best sales person a time suck position? How about your receptionist (the in house first face/voice of your organization)? Sure, it may not be YOU doing some or all of those efforts and positions, but you value their time and efforts right? Also, you invested time in training these individuals to be their best… was that a “Time Suck” as well?

Doesn’t monitoring your brand or business make sense? How about engaging your customers beyond your physical location as well? No not just in traditional advertising methods… besides, who wants to be interrupted by advertising!

Maybe you have tried your hand at Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn on your own and you did not see any immediate results and you decided to quit! Maybe you outsourced your Social Media efforts to what I refer to as a Social Media Huckster and you wasted your time and money and did not see the results you were promised. If that is the case, brush yourself off, put in the time and continue working on it!

YES, Social Media takes time, but so does building relationships at your local chamber meetings, or client calls. Social Media can be one of the best networking/word of mouth tools in your marketing tool belt! So why are you ignoring it or treating it like the marketing version of an “ugly step-child”?

Twitter and Facebook: A new front door to your business?

Your Physical Front Door: Let’s say you have a retail store… and someone walks in that door. What do you do… you greet them right? You ask them how you can help them, offer them (hopfully) great service and close the sale. BUT what if the customer walked in and you ignored them? Possibly this customer may tell friends they know about the bad service… yup, negative word of mouth is not what any business wants! (We all know that!)

On the other hand, you may get praised for great service in the same manner… but we all know bad word of mouth spreads more than positive… sad but true, so do not count on it!

So get out there and make the positive happen… Care, Listen, and Engage!

Your Online Front Door: You may refer to this as your website, but you are assuming people are coming to your site. So why not listen online and be proactive? Just do not be “that guy”! (We will cover “that guy” in another post)

Let’s say someone on Twitter or Facebook mentions your business or product. Maybe they are looking for (in general) where to find a product or service, or maybe they mention you by name. Maybe the person is happy with your product or service, or possibly they are upset with the lack of service received, and in either case they tweet about it or post something on their blog, Facebook, Yelp, UrbanSpoon etc. THE PROBLEM: This is your virtual front door and everyone can see it, NOT JUST YOU! Everyone can see the interaction (or possibly lack there-of). EVERYONE has access to customer comments, good or bad… and you need to be on top of it!

If you do not get your Social Media house in order and take advantage of the opportunity you have to engage you can and may:

Leave business on the table and lose sales

Lose the opportunity to become the leader in your business in social media

Lose the opportunity to turn a negative into a positive

Lose a customer to a competitor that cares and is proactive in the Social Media space

So, why is hiring someone (outsource or in-house) to handle your social media properly not a priority? You may have a professional CPA do your accounting, an attorney to review your contracts, maybe you outsource your H/R and payroll as well? But you have yet to take Social Media seriously! Why is that? Do you not care? Are you scared to see and have to react to a negative comment? Are you not IN LOVE with your customers and want to thank them for their business? Do you not like building relationships and in turn possibly getting return business and or referrals from existing clients?

When thinking about your Social Media strategy, do you:

Care about your company, products, services, and most important your customers?

Listen and Monitor Twitter for real time comments regarding your business or product? How about Facebook, other websites and blogs talking about your company?

Engage your fans, or react properly to good and bad comments? Do you create an online community around your business?

Do you do this all over and over again with a passion?

Obviously these are just some ideas to get you thinking, and there is so much more to cover. We will leave that to future posts!

Now the million dollar question: Do you outsource your social media efforts, or do you do it in house? Well, I say you do whatever works best for you… as long as you plan your strategy, execute, and stay on top of your efforts… but most important, DO NOT QUIT!

And, if you are looking to outsource… I am available. (shameless plug).

Anything to add? Leave a comment below.

Until next time,

Will NYPD Pizzeria Be My New Favorite Pizza Place? Unfortunately… No.

I must say I was pretty excited to try out NYPD Pizzeria in Draper Utah. Last week there was a Groupon for NYPD Pizzeria, and I decided that now was the time to give this new pizza franchise a try.

I am always on the lookout for great pizza… something that sometimes seems hard to come by with so many chains selling crap disguised as pizza for $5.00 – $10.00 a pie. So when an outfit comes into town with a higher price point, and the myth of the “New York Style Pizza” in tow… it just has to be good right… right?

Let’s start from the beginning. As we walk in to NYPD Pizzeria, I am greeted with a sign that says please wait to be seated… we wait a few moments, and a preoccupied girl comes up and proceeds to tell us to sit where we like…Ummm… OKAY. We go find a seat and a few moments later she follows with menus.

Inside NYPD Pizzeria

NYPD Pizzeria has quite a large menu. Many seemingly awesome ingredient combinations you can choose from, as well as pasta, wings, calzones and sandwiches. The restaurant is decked out with NYPD flavor and nick-nacks as well as some big screen TV’s on the wall. Yup a cool looking place! And if you are lucky you may even see the pizza maker flipping the pizza dough around like he is competing on a Food Network show.

Our server comes by and we order our meal. 18″ Hawaiian and a Manhattan Meat Lovers… as well as Garlic Knots to start us off as an appetizer.

Garlic not Knots?

The Garlic Knots arrive… and rather than being Knotty, they are more of just a roll with some garlic slathered on them (see photo of how it is supposed to look, vs how it looked). When I hear Garlic Knots I think of Free Wheeler Pizza here in Salt Lake City where these rolls of bread are soaked in a heavenly bag of butter and garlic so when you bite into them you get that squishy burst of flavor and awesome chew of the perfectly cooked bread.

Now these look Knotty...

So, needless to say, in comparison, I was disappointed not only in presentation but in taste. These could have been much better. On the plus side was the marinara sauce that was served with the “Knots”, it did had a good flavor.

Pizza arrives, and I am excited to dig in. Up front understand that I am not a huge fan of the super thin NYC style of pizza… I am a crust guy and I like it thick and chewy. But I am never one to shy away from any pizza, as pizza is the perfect food, and unless it is horribly massacred, I will eat it. So with that being said… on with the review.

We dig in, and I start with the Manhattan Meat Lovers: Pepperoni, meatballs, smoked bacon, homemade sauce and mozzarella cheese. The pizza is decent, but I think it is just a bit too greasy. “Yeah yeah yeah Doc” you say to me, “you ordered Meat Lovers… dumb ass!” True, I did… but I have ordered a meal lovers elsewhere, and it was not nearly as greasy, or if it was, it was sopped up in a thicker crust.

The flavors on there own left me wanting more… the bacon and pepperoni seemed undercooked and flavorless, and the meatballs were not balls, the were more like a shaving of a meatball. Really thin, and darn near tasteless. By the time I finished up my pie of this flavor, I found myself looking forward to getting to the thicker part of the crust… you know the part some people do not eat because they think it will grow hair on your back! (dang… so that’s why, figures!) ANYWAY, I actually scraped the meat mixture off the thin pie, rolled it up and finished it off leaving a pile of meat and grease on my plate.

The Hawaiian did have good flavor as the ham and pineapple are always a winner… who can mess that up anyway… anyone?

By the end of the night at NYPD Pizzeria I left very disappointed… yes in the food, but more in the service. From the moment we walked in, we were not greeted as pleasant as you would hope to be in a sit down establishment. I have been greeted more pleasantly at a 7-Eleven connivence store than we were here. Hell, there has been better greetings at Dee’s family restaurant at 1AM by the disgruntled manger who may or may not have just broken up with his wife but was forced to work his late shift none the less! Sorry… I digress… Stay on topic Doc!

From the time our order was taken we were visited by wait staff a total of 3 times, once to take our order, once to deliver our order, once to drop off our check. Now I said visited right? I had to wait and ask the staff for a refill on my drink 2 times (I gauge how I will tip by how many times I am refilled without asking… do not judge), and we had to wait and flag down the server to pay her for god sake! And if it were not for me to say “have a great night” she would have kept on walking after taking my Groupon and cash without having to seemingly force herself to turn around and say “you too”. God forbid you thank your customers for visiting your place of business… I mean really, who does that in this day and age? Maybe it is the New York way to take your money and kick your ass out so the next victim can walk in the door?

Now Hiring at NYPD Pizzeria

Interestingly, there was a sign out front looking for an assistant manager, servers and delivery drivers… might I suggest starting with a Manager instead? Not one person in this place that was employed smiled one time… and I was watching. From the other server who seemed annoyed that we came in in the first place, to the server guy in training who acted like he really wanted to say hello… or was he just trying to give me a signal to leave?

In the end, while I really wanted to like this place, I left with really mixed emotions. You know, like the ones you have Christmas morning after you open your “I know this is the video game present I wanted for a year by the shape of the box”, but to open it and find out it is a previously viewed movie of Tuner and Hooch with the $5.00 price tag still on it with the wrapping torn open so you know your x-wife watched it before you got it as a holiday gift! Oh shit, sorry, here I go again… back to NYPD!

Honestly, I am not one to write up reviews like this, I do not like to pan a restaurant. But honestly, I can not sit here and lie and say it was the best experience ever. Maybe it is really not the restaurant I am panning, but an odd bad food night, and a woke up on the wrong side of the bed service evening?

I have been to NYC once in my life for a total of 40 hours… I ate at 5 places, one being a pizza by the slice place. Service in NYC is fast paced, but good. Restaurants dote on you and give you great service. So while NYPD Pizzeria may have brought the flavor of NYC Pizza to SLC, they did not bring the service.

On a side note, it was interesting that they had a sign on the door for folks who used Groupon, saying that they have to have the printed coupon with them as they apparently did not accept the iPhone version, so I am glad I brought mine otherwise my 15 mile trek there would have been in vain! Also, I noticed a couple other folks in there with Groupon coupons printed as well. Maybe the staff was sick of Groupon people, maybe they feel like they would not tip well so why give them decent service? Who know’s if that is why, but it could very well be part of the reason.

At the end of the night I felt like I paid too much for the food and service… Total bill $28.98 + an unearned 20% tip. Total out of pocket $19.00, and it left me wanting a refund!

First Groupon experience = Meh!
NYPD Food = B-
NYPD Service = D

So will I go back? Most likely… as I always give a place a second chance… but almost never a third.

So for what it is worth, this is my opinion… have you been to NYPD Pizza? Did I just have an off night? Am I just too hard to please and should I just take shitty service like a man?

Would love to hear back from you… be sure to comment below.

Until next time…

Huckster by definition:

n. One who uses aggressive, showy, and sometimes devious methods to promote or sell a product.

v. To promote or attempt to sell (a commercial product, for example) in an overaggressive or showy manner.

Now that we have that definition out of the way, let’s get to the meat of this post!

A few days ago, I was on a webinar talking about “social media tactics” on how to use platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. The webinar was put on by someone I have come to respect and admire, but I was so flustered by the end of the webinar, I just needed to write something about it.

I was enjoying the content, and even picked up a golden nugget or two, but about 45 minutes in the information it went from good social media practices, to “we’ll teach you how to game the system, get hundreds, if not thousands of followers every day, and well show you how to do it while you sleep!” In other words… automation!

Ugg, anything automated in social media (except for maybe a couple of exceptions) is complete and utter BS! Add on top of that, people were asked to spend (at the end of this particular webinar) a lot of money paying these “trainers/gurus” on how to learn to game the system, automate their social existence, and in my opinion fail in this world we call social media!

At the end of this presentation, I got the typical Huckster promo… “but wait, there’s more. If you buy now, we’ll not only train you to be a guru, but we will also throw in our 3 ebooks, and give you 1 hour of personal coaching… all for the low low price of $x.xx” you get my drift right?

I do not have a problem with these type of webinars, nor do I have a problem with training people on how to use social media, but if you are going to offer a course of any kind don’t do it with hype, smoke and mirrors. Don’t just sell your prospects on how they can have 50,000 followers in 3 months, and it will all be done while they sleep, teach your students how to do social media the right way!

Social media is indeed that… social. You can’t win by gaming your number of followers. People already on twitter can smell these techniques like a fart in the car, and they either #1 do not follow you back #2 are on an auto follow system and do not pay attention to you anyway, or #3 report you as spam.

It is funny to see how so many social media “guru’s” are applying the old traditional media tactics on twitter etc. They figure the more eye balls, or impressions you get, the more sales will eventually follow. And maybe that is true to an extent, but is that the route you want to take? Do you want to be “that guy” or “that company”? Social media is not a newspaper, TV or radio commercial, or even a billboard for that matter. Just because people may follow back your mega automated account does not mean they are listening or paying attention to you, your brand or your message.

Years ago, in our family business where I handled all our advertising, I would have reps come in from every media telling me how many subscribers they have, how many drive by impressions a billboard will get, how many listeners the radio station has, how many readers their particular publication has, what their demographics of all of the above is… well woop dee freaking doo man! In social media if people are not looking, listening or paying attention your message goes unheard… PERIOD!

So, to the hucksters selling this BS bill of goods, you are just taking money from the uneducated, teaching them bad black hat tactics, and just ruining the reputation for what is, arguably one of the best ways to market yourself and your business… social media! So STOP IT already!

To the audience or consumers of these hucksters… don’t buy into the hype, the automation or how easy it is. Building your brand in social media is hard work, and takes time. You get back from it what you put into it. Put in the time, and you will get the great results you desire.

So, you want to do social media the right way? Here you go! And I won’t charge you $999! (assuming you have a killer product, service or content.)

Care

Engage

Repeat

Find the tools and networks that will work best for you while applying the 5 steps above! And if I can be of assistance in helping your decide where to get started, you know where to find me!

Now… go get to work!

Feel free to leave a comment below… would love your feedback!

Until next time…

I thought of this question last night just before the awards started live in California. I was hanging out on Twitter and I saw all the chatter start to happen about the Grammy Awards.

So I started to kind of tune out the chatter about the show knowing I would end up hearing the results via Twitter from many of the people I follow before the awards actually started here in Utah (where the awards started an hour later).

So, I have the @cnnbrk account on Twitter set to send me an SMS for “Breaking News”… because, well, that is what that account should be used for… right? Well, just after the live show starts, I get a @cnnbrk SMS message saying “Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” wins the Grammy for song of the year”. And of course CNN kept on broadcasting results all night… because as you know, the results are “Breaking News”.

Well, not that I really care in the end who wins what what award and for what song as I have no stake in the game, nor can I really blame @cnnbrk for announcing the winners, but it kind of made me think of how social media can ruin results for live events for people who watch them on a delayed feed. And to take it a step further, how does social media affect the advertisers who spend a lot of money for commercials during the show especially if people accidentally hear the results and decide not to tune in as a because they heard the winner already.

Recently, the Golden Globes (at least I think it was that show) decided to broadcast live in all time zones… and I thought that to be a smart idea. People had the option, if they so chose, to see it live OR record the program on their DVR and take the chance they may hear something before they got around to watching it. In the end, it was the viewers choice right?

Can you imagine if the NBA, PGA, or hell even the Super Bowl decided to air games based on the same principles the Grammys do… or many other shows for that matter? What if you heard the score to the end of your favorite teams game one or 2 hours before your delayed version ended even ended?

We live in a time, with social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, where you have access to up to the second updates. With people at the event or watching the live feed you can not, unless you live in a cave, escape the information.

In the end, social media did not “ruin” the Grammy Awards for me last night as I mainly tuned in for the performances anyway (Props to Gaga and the Michael Jackson tribute). Also, I did record it on my DVR and ended up fast forwarding through as many commercials as I could, so maybe my concern for the advertisers is mute… or at least as as it relates to me.

What is your opinion? Should television networks change their thinking when it comes to broadcasting live events like the Grammy Awards? Or am I just off my rocker?

Would love to have your comments below!

Until next time…

Doc

(PS: @cnnbrk you annoy me. please only use that account for “Breaking News”. If you must, use an entertainment account on twitter for these types of updates. You are losing trust as far as I am concerned with that account… break it up a bit. @CNNSports @CNNEnt or in this case @CNNSpoilers. I have invited you into my mobile phone for SMS updates… do not abuse it! Besides, every time I get an SMS from you, all I can think about is Wolf Blitzer saying “Please Stand By”… too bad I can not associate a ring tone of him saying that to the tweet SMS messages I get from you. Hehehe)

(PS2: Networks… get with the times as they are a changing! How about The Grammys LIVE actually LIVE everywhere next year?)

Okay, now I am really done… Doc

So, now that a few days have passed since Steve Jobs announced the iPad from Apple, I thought I would share my thoughts about this amazing looking device.

Overall I am excited to see how well this new iPad sells. For the most part I think that the iPad hits the mark for what Steve Jobs said about it in his opening remarks… for the most part.

However, people are complaining that this device does not do a few key things like multi-task, no flash support in the browser, no camera, it is not as feature rich as a net-book, blah blah blah… let’s dig deeper shall we?

No Multitasking: OK, OK, I get it…. I hear it every day. People hate that the iPhone does not multi-task, but I have been using the iPhone for almost 2 years and I have gotten over the fact that there is no multi-tasking. The OS is so simple and elegant to use, and it is easy enough to just pop in and out of apps as needed… so get over it! Instead of having Pandora run in the background while you surf the web, or build a fancy presentation, use the little thing called the built in iPod, for the most part (at least on the iPhone) it runs in the background of many apps.

No Flash Support: Not an issue for me as I do not like flash based sites for the most part, and flash tends to crash my browsers anyway. But is this a deal breaker for the iPad… is it something that would seriously stop you from buying it? Look, if you come across a site with flash, and you just have to see it, go to your laptop or desktop and check out the site and the flash in all of it’s glory. But seriously, is no flash really that big of a deal? Where the “flash” of this device comes in is in the way of apps, the ebook reader, and all the other cool stuff it does. Hopefully in an update down the road, Apple will choose to add flash support, but until then enjoy the device.

No Camera: This omission is one thing that may stop me from buying it. Not that I will take it everywhere and want to use it as a camera, but I see great use in the business world. If I am traveling and want to use Skype for a video call, or if I was in a sales presentation and I wanted to prop the iPad up in the nifty new stand so it could make the attendees in the conference room visible to the presenter on the other end would be awesome. You know the camera is going to come out eventually, and you KNOW Apple is just sitting back and releasing this version knowing damn good and well that once the camera version comes out people will flock to it and upgrade. If you can get a camera into an iPhone, you can get it into an iPad… and the consumer has come to expect it! #BadApple

Net-books are better: This is a different device. sure on the net-book you can multi-task, and do a couple of things at the same time. Whoop dee doo, but does it have a 10″ touchscreen, or the ability to run your favorite apps, or will it act like a photo frame if you wish, can it be a killer ebook reader? The only thing I see the net-book doing better is the cameras that are built in.

Look, this iPad does so much out of the box, and is simply amazing from what I have seen so far. Can it get better… of course, and that leads me to…

Four BIG things that I think Apple did wrong in my opinion:

Not having the iPad ready for purchase the day of, or at least during the week of the announcement. Put this device in the hands of the people who want it! They have been waiting for years to have it. Don’t allow the rumor mills to ruin the launch, or allow another manufacturer to steal the thunder.

Why have 6 models? Do we need 6 versions? Not only is this a bad idea from a manufacturing standpoint, and a SKU inventory challenge, it is also just confusing to the consumer. Does anyone really need 64 gigs of memory for a device like this? Simplify the buying experience, and drop a model. Launch a 64 gig version in a year or so if you must when memory prices come down.

Not having additional carrier options available besides AT&T. Need I say more about that? And that kind of ties back into #2 above… why not just launch the models with wifi and 3g? Why have a wifi only version? And if I have to be stuck with AT&T offer a contract version that can help to reduce the price of the iPad… why should it be more money for that model when I am guaranteeing AT&T even more money on a monthly basis.

The name iPad. How about an explanation behind the name to help curb the association of the iPad to some feminine hygiene product? iSlate would have been cool, there just had to be a better name. #iBoring

I think the iPad will also be a segway or introduction device for Apple. Think of it, so many people want a Mac, but maybe can not afford a laptop or desktop. This iPad is affordable to almost anyone. If you can afford a net-book, you can afford an iPad, and I think that is a smart move by Apple. In a way is the iPad a loss leader? Hell you can’t even buy an iPhone without a contract for less than you can buy an iPad for!

In the end, is the iPad the revolutionary product Steve Jobs said it is? Time will tell… but I think it is pretty dang close. Is it a must have middle category piece of technology between the smart phone and the computer? Personally I do not think so… it is not a “must have” item for me, but I definitely “want” one.

In the end, if I was to buy an iPad, I would most likley choose the base model… and maybe upgrade it to the 3G version. If I was in the market for an eReader like a Kindle, it would be a no brainer to purchase the iPad for that function alone.

What do you think? Is this iPad all it is cracked up to be?

Until next time…

So, a couple of days ago I was catching up with some of Chris Brogan’s posts and I ran across a video on this entry.

The video is called “The Eight Irresistible Principles of Fun”.

On his site he left the message short and sweet and let the video do the talking. And to you I do the same… take 5 minutes and watch it.

Anyway, I liked this video so much, I figured I would share it here as well, just in case you are not following Chris Brogan! =) (Like who isn’t?)

So let me ask you… are you having fun? Or do you take life to seriously? In the moment of writing this post I think I am on the taking life too seriously side. After watching this video however, it is nice to remind myself to have some fun along the way and go for it!

Life is too short! So, let’s see where life takes me now.

In case you could not see the video in the post… you can click here to see it on YouTube.

Until next time…
